Sunset at Sukamade Beach travel tips

After guiding hundreds of visitors to Sukamade Beach, we have compiled the most important tips for first-time visitors. Read these before you go and your trip will be smoother, safer, and more rewarding.

Before You Go

1. Book in advance. Sukamade has limited capacity — the ranger station sleeps about 20 guests per night. During peak season (December-February), rooms book out weeks ahead. Do not show up without a reservation.

2. Use the right luggage. Soft duffel bag or backpack only. Suitcases do not survive the 4WD journey — they sit on the roof rack and get bounced around for hours.

3. Pack for the road. The 4WD ride from Sarongan to Sukamade takes 2-3 hours on a rough jungle track. Motion sickness medication is recommended even if you rarely get carsick.

On Arrival

4. Check in at the Andongrejo gate. All visitors must register at the park entrance gate near Andongrejo before proceeding to Sukamade. Keep your ticket — it will be checked again.

5. Stock up in Sarongan. The village is your last opportunity to buy water, snacks, or supplies. The ranger station has limited provisions.

6. Prepare for no signal. Cellular service is unreliable or non-existent beyond Sarongan. Download your maps, confirm your pickup time, and let family know you will be offline.

During Your Stay

7. Follow the ranger's instructions. The rangers have been monitoring this beach for decades. When they say stay behind this line or no flash photography, there is a reason. Respect their authority.

8. Red light only. White light disorients turtles and can cause them to abort nesting. Your headlamp must have a red mode. Do not use your phone flash. Do not take selfies with the turtle.

9. No flash photography. This is the most common mistake visitors make. Flash blinds the turtle and disrupts nesting. If you want photos, bring a camera with high ISO capability and a fast lens.

10. Be patient and quiet. Turtles are wild animals. They may take 30 minutes to an hour to complete nesting. The waiting is part of the experience — it builds anticipation and respect.

11. Dress for the patrol. Long pants, long sleeves, closed-toe shoes. Mosquitoes and sandflies are active at night. Dark clothing is preferred to minimize disturbance.

Responsible Tourism

12. Minimize waste. Everything you bring into the park must go out with you. Bring a reusable water bottle and avoid single-use plastics.

13. Support local guides. Hiring local guides puts money directly into the community that protects this beach. It is the most impactful way to contribute beyond the entry fee.

14. Be flexible. Road conditions change rapidly, especially in the wet season. Rivers may flood. Turtles may not show up. The best visitors arrive with patience and a sense of adventure.

15. Leave a tip for the rangers. The rangers patrol every single night of the year on modest government wages. Your gratuity is a direct investment in conservation.
